Moving Forward Together: Empowering Women in the Defence and Security Sector

Article written by Jodie Evans, Co-Founder of Women Empowering Defence

As we commemorate Women’s History Month 2025, we embrace the theme “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations,” a sentiment that resonates deeply within our mission at Women Empowering Defence. This month offers a moment to reflect on the strides women have made in various sectors, including the defence and security sector, and to acknowledge the journey ahead in achieving true gender parity.

Reflecting on Progress

Historically, the defence and security sector has been predominantly male dominated, but recent years have witnessed a transformative shift. Women now serve in various capacities, from frontline roles to strategic leadership positions. This evolution is not merely about numbers; it’s about the invaluable perspectives and skills women bring to the table, enhancing operational effectiveness and fostering comprehensive security strategies.

General Dame Sharon Nesmith

Throughout history, trailblazing women have shattered barriers and paved the way for future generations. Figures like General Dame Sharon Nesmith, the first woman appointed Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, have demonstrated unwavering leadership and resilience. Her groundbreaking achievements, including being the first woman to command a British Army brigade and division, inspire countless women to pursue roles once deemed unattainable, reinforcing the importance of representation and perseverance.
We have seen first-hand how diversity in leadership and decision-making leads to stronger, more adaptive teams. Women in the defence and security sector bring innovation, resilience, and a different approach to problem-solving, often emphasising collaboration and long-term strategic thinking. As we reflect on these achievements, we must also recognise that breaking barriers does not happen overnight. It requires sustained commitment from individuals and institutions alike.

Our Strategic Core Outcomes

At Women Empowering Defence, our initiatives are anchored in strategic core outcomes designed to foster an inclusive and equitable environment. These focus areas represent the heart of our mission and drive our work toward meaningful and lasting change.

Mentorship and Leadership Development

Recognising the power of mentorship, this year we will be launching a cross-government program that will connect emerging female professionals with seasoned leaders. These relationships will cultivate confidence, skill development, and career progression. Many women in the defence and security sector face unique challenges, from navigating male-dominated work environments to balancing personal and professional aspirations. Mentorship provides guidance and support, ensuring that talented women are not just recruited but retained and advanced in their careers.

Through leadership development initiatives, we equip women with the skills and knowledge necessary to take on senior roles. It is not enough to simply open doors; we must also ensure that women have the tools and resources needed to walk through them with confidence and succeed.

Community Building and Networking

We provide platforms for women in the defence and security sector to connect, share experiences, and support one another, fostering a robust community that stands united in the pursuit of equality. A strong network of peers and allies is invaluable in overcoming the challenges women face in this field.
Networking events, forums, and conferences allow women to exchange ideas, share best practices, and forge meaningful professional relationships. By creating spaces where women’s voices are heard and amplified, we cultivate a culture of empowerment and mutual support.

The Road Ahead: Addressing Ongoing Challenges

While we celebrate the progress made, it’s imperative to recognise the work that remains. The path to equality in the defence and security sector is not yet complete, and we must remain steadfast in our commitment to the cause.

Cultural Transformation

Changing longstanding cultural norms within the defence and security sector requires persistent effort. We must continue to challenge stereotypes and promote an environment where diversity is valued and respected. Cultural transformation is not just about individual mindsets—it’s about institutional shifts that ensure inclusivity is woven into the fabric of defence organisations.

Eliminating Barriers

Despite advancements, barriers such as unconscious bias and unequal access to opportunities persist. Targeted training and awareness programs are essential to dismantle these obstacles. We must also ensure that recruitment, retention, and promotion processes are structured to provide fair and equal opportunities for all.

UK Collaboration

Empowering women in the defence and security sector requires strong partnerships across the entire defence enterprise. By working alongside defence industry leaders, private sector organisations, and advocacy groups, we can share best practices and create a cohesive approach to gender inclusivity. UK-wide collaboration ensures that progress is consistent and sustainable across military, government, and private sector defence roles.

Through strategic alliances with partners from across the defence enterprise, we can implement programmes that support women at every stage of their careers. By leveraging national partnerships, we ensure that our collective efforts result in tangible, lasting change that strengthens the entire defence and security sector.

Conclusion

Women’s History Month serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience, strength, and contributions of women throughout history. At Women Empowering Defence, we are committed to advancing these ideals within the defence and security sector. By moving forward together, we can create a future where women are not only participants but are also leaders and innovators in defence, inspiring generations to come.
True empowerment does not come from words alone—it comes from action. As we celebrate the achievements of women in the defence and security sector, let us also recommit ourselves to the work ahead. Change is within our reach, but it requires the dedication of every individual who believes in the power of inclusion and the strength of diversity.
