Armed Forces Day gives us an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible commitment, resilience and dedication shown by the armed forces community throughout the year.

For me, this day has a personal meaning. My partner serves in the Army and I feel incredibly fortunate that he is based ‘somewhat’ locally at present. Being close brings a level of comfort that so many military families do not always have. It also provides me with a greater appreciation of the sacrifices that so many service personnel and their families make every day. The fact he travels over an hour each way every day without complaint so we can have him home means the world, but so many others have hundreds or thousands of miles between them. 

Behind every uniform is a person who has chosen a life of commitment, responsibility and service. Armed forces personnel often work in demanding and challenging environments, spending long periods away from family and loved ones while maintaining the highest levels of professionalism and resilience. Their work protects and supports communities, often without recognition of the personal sacrifices involved.

However, Armed Forces Day is also a moment to recognise the wider support network around those serving. Partners, spouses, children, parents, friends and communities all make sacrifices too. They provide encouragement, strength and stability behind the scenes, often adapting to uncertainty, distance and changing circumstances.

Across the UK, Armed Forces Day events bring communities together to show appreciation and celebrate the people who serve. From local events and parades to community activities and celebrations, it creates an opportunity to reflect on the enormous contribution of the armed forces community and the values they represent. Courage, resilience, dedication and teamwork.

Today is a chance to simply say thank you and get involved if you have events near you going on. 

Thank you to those currently serving, veterans who have served before them, reservists, cadets and the families and communities who stand beside them. Your commitment and strength do not go unnoticed, and we are incredibly fortunate to have people willing to dedicate their lives to keeping others safe.
